The deceased was sleeping on a couch in her parent’s house. Her mother and three siblings were also in the house when tragedy struck.
It was reported that the university was working on replacing its temporary fence with a permanent one after securing its license earlier this year.
The father of the deceased had gone to work when the fence collapsed and trapped his family. The building was reduced to rubble.
Ayobami Adegbesan, the mother of Olamide who had still not been informed of the demise of her daughter explained that she rescued her six month old child while the neighbours rescued the other children. Olamide was brought out alive but passed away shortly afterwards.
She said: “The fence had collapsed sometime in June but the engineer reconstructed it and made it a bit higher. It was raining heavily this morning (Thursday) and my husband had left for work around 5am. Later, I heard a loud sound and I felt everything falling on me.
“At first, I thought I was dreaming. I managed to crawl out of the rubble with my baby. I was practically naked with the baby in my arm. I started crying for help, but people did not hear me because of the rain. I began knocking on doors until a few men came out to help me.
“They were able to help me bring my children out of the rubble, they told me they have rushed the three of them to the hospital but I have yet to see any of them.”
A resident and one of the people who carried out the rescue operation who simply gave his name as Ademola said the girl died on the way to the hospital. He added that the channel system constructed by the university could not hold the heavy flood which eventually brought the fence down on the building.
